The Growing Use of Animations in Social Media

As algorithms favor video content, content creators are scrambling to include more video posts and animations to keep followers engaged.

We are used to seeing animations in movies and T.V. shows, lighting up the screen with their eye-catching movements. They help tell a story in a fun and engaging way. Similar to those, social media trends are always changing and online users are constantly trying to find new ways to differentiate and help the content they produce stand out from others. Animations are being taken to a whole new level with their popularity rising on all social media. Animations are able to tell a story and can emotionally connect to their audience, similarly to an audience member engaged in a movie romance or drama, they feel like they are a part of the story.

One of the main forms of online animation content started with the GIF. They were not always intended for social media use but once they became popular, GIFs spread like wildfire on all social media platforms. They were originally created for an easier exchange of images between computers. Twitter has said that tweets with a GIF see 55% more engagement than those without. GIFs and other animations are also more commonly shared within texts and direct messages. They create another level of engagement with the user, not only catching their eye but keeping it. In case you’re wondering how to pronounce GIF, developer Steve Wilhite says “Choosy developers choose GIF” playing on the Jiffy peanut butter commercial.

Animations can also be used as a great way to explain a difficult concept. This is more effective than a standstill picture or text, especially since about 65% of people are visual learners, and 90% of the information transmitted to our brains is visual. Sites like Crazy Egg have seen an uptick in conversion rates by 64% and generated an extra income of $21,000 per month, all thanks to an animated explainer video.
